Ambala, also called Umbala, is a major city in the northern part of the state of Haryana, India. It is located on the border with the state of Punjab. It lies surrounded by the Tangri river and Ghaggar River and is 40 km away from the state capital f Chandigarh. Historical sources reveal that the past of Ambala dates back to the 14th century when the Ambala District and city were founded and established by Amba Rajput rulers.it is also said the city and district got its name after goddess “Bhawani Amba”, there is a temple in the city that is worshipped by devotees.
Other religious places worth visiting are Sisganj Gurudwara, Jain Mandir, Holy Redeemer Church, and Hanuman Mandiir. Ambala is known for its cloth market all over India. The new cloth market is known as sarees and silk. It is one of the oldest and largest markets in the entire subcontinent of Asia. There is a Airforce station as well as a major army cantonment, meaning military presence is constant that makes this city a cosmopolitan city where people from across the country live.
Economically important, Ambala is a major grain, cotton, and sugar trade center with several industries in the surrounding areas including cotton ginning, flour milling, food processing, and various other manufacturing units. Cloth weaving and bamboo furniture making are also important. Well connected by rail, road, and air with all major cities of India the city is a major tourism center and hub to move towards other important tourist centers in the surrounding region like Chandigarh, Shimla, Kurukshetra, Delhi, and Amritsar.
Due to its proximity to Punjab, besides hindi many people speak punjabi language. There are numerous places worth visiting in the city, these include the historic European Cemetery.in Ambala Cantonment. The city has been the scene of major battles including Sikh , Mughas, in 1709 and in 1857 rebellion against the British.
