Bijapur, also known as Vijayapura, is the district headquarters of Bijapur distgrict of Karnataka India. It is also the headquarters for Bijapur Taluka. Bijapur city is well known for its historical monuments of architectural importance built during the rule of the Adil Shahi dynasty. After India’s Independence in 1947, the district became part of Bombay, and the district Bijapur along with other Kannada speaking areas became part of Karnataka on 1 November 1956. Central government approved request to rename the city from Bijapur to “Vijayapura” on November 1, 2014.

Bijapur city is well known for its historical monuments of architectural importance built during the rule of the Adil Shahi dynasty and main draw of tourism. Bijapur has some of the most beautiful historical monuments of Islamic architecture. There are mosques and tombs that have magnificent works of carvings and architecture dating back to the Adil Shahi dynasty that ruled the Deccan region of southern India during 1490 to 1686. Gol Gumbaz Gol with a diameter of 124 feet is the most famous monument in Vijayapura.

It is the tomb of Mohammed Adil Shah who ruled 1627–1657) It is the second largest dome ever built, next in size only to St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. A particular attraction in this monument is the central chamber, where every sound is echoed seven times. Bijapur is a well-known for its non-vegetarian dishes. Especially Mughlaicuisines. Bijapur was founded in the late 900s under Tailapa II, who was Rashtrakutan governor of Tardavadi, and after the destruction to the empire caused by invasion of Paramara of Malwa, declared his independence and went on to found the empire of the Chalukyas of Kalyani, where the city was referred as Vijayapur.

In 1347, the area was conquered by the Bahmani Sultanate of Gulbarga. By this time the city was being referred as Vijapur or Bijapur. Bijapur is a growing educational hub in the state that draws students from across India. It is also well known as a sports hub and is the home base for popular Karnataka premier league cricket team as Bijapur Bulls. The best time to visit is from October to February.
