Bokaro SteelCity or simply Bokaro, is one of the well planned cities of India and also an urban agglomeration. Just like othr steel cities of India like Bhilai, Rourkela, Durgapur, Burnpur Jamshedpur Salem and Vizag, Bokaro is a major industrial centre and the fourth-largest city in the state of Jharkhand. Bokaro Steel Plant was incorporated as a limited company in 1964. It was later merged with the state-owned Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). Much of the civic amenities of the city is managed by Bokaro Steel Plant management.
Like other steel cities of India the city is mostly divided into sectors where plant employees stay in quarters and each sector has its setup of markets, clubs, playgrounds, parks, hospitals and other essentials. A multi cultural city the major languages spoken here are Hindi, Bhojpuri, Khortha, Magahi, Urdu, Bengali, Santhali and Maithili. Steel plant and associated ancillary units are the major employment generator in the city. Well connected by rail, road and air with all major cities in India, there are many notable educational institutions in the city.
There are numerous places worth visiting and around the city that are worth visiting. These include Parasnath Hills named after Parasnath, the 23rd Tirthankara is the highest peak in the state and one of the prominent Jain pilgrimage centres. Rajrappa is a tourist place and is known for the ‘Chinnamasta Temple’ which is situated on the bank of the confluence of the rivers Bhairavi and Damodar. Named after ‘Rajrappa Mandir’ Rajrappa is 60 km from Bokaro. Bokaro City Centre, Ram mandir area and Bokaro Mall are the main shopping area of the city.
Also worth visiting is the Jagannath Temple, a replica of the famous temple in Puri, Orissa. Ayappa temple, Ram mandir temple complex and Gayatri mandir are also worth visiting in the city. Among other places worth visiting are Garga Dam built on the Garga river and Tenughat dam. A guided tour of Bokaro steel plant can also be done by tourist. Ukrid Makkah Masjid is a mosque located at Ukrid. It is one of the most beautiful mosques on the city along with the Noori Masjid. Also worth visiting is the Jawaharlal Nehru Biological Park is the largest zoological garden of the state of Jharkhand. The zoo has varieties of animals and birds which have been brought from different parts of world.
