Kozhikode or Calicut is a coastal city in the southern state of #Kerala, #Indian. the city was an early focus for #Arab traders, who first settled there in the 7th century. Vasco da Gama, the #Portuguese discoverer of the sea route to India, reached Kozhikode in 1498. The name Kozhikode is derived from Koyil-Kota (fort), meaning fortified palace. The name also got corrupted into Kolikod, or its anglicized version Calicut. Arab merchants called it Qāliqūṭ.
Although the city’s official name is Kozhikode, in English it is sometimes known by its anglicized version, Calicut. The word calico, is a fine variety of hand-woven cotton cloth that was exported from the port of Kozhikode. The city was and is still a significant spice trade center and is close to Kappad Beach, where Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama landed in 1498. The central Kozhikode Beach, overlooked by an old lighthouse, is a popular spot for watching the #sunset.
