The major first language of the district is GarhwalI with the most population being Hindu. As the elevation of the district ranges from 800 m to 8,000 m above sea level the climate of the district varies largely depending on the altitude. The winter season is from about mid-November to March and monsoon from June to September. The best time to visit is from November to March. Well connected by roads, the rail link is provided by Rishikesh and the air link is provided by Dehradun. Chamoli is the place of origination for many important rivers that form part of the tributary system of Gnnga, these are Alaknanda, which joins with Bhagirathi at Devprayag to constitute the Ganges.

Other major rivers that join Alaknanda, are Saraswati, Nandakini, Pindar Khir Ganga, Bhyundar Ganga, Dhauliganga, and other downstream small tributaries like Helang, Garud, Patal and Birahiganga join the Alaknanda between Joshimath and Chamoli. Agriculture and tourism are the biggest economic activity in Chamoli. Festivals play an important role in the life of people in the region.

Some important festivals are Ram Navami, Nag Panchmi, Raksha-Bandhan, Janmashtami, Dusshera, Dipawali, Makar Sankranti, Shivaratri, and Holi. Chamoli is beautiful heaven for nature lovers and an adventurer’s paradise. Chamoli is crammed with temples, housing one of the most religiously significant temples of Hindus, Badrinath temple, and the three of the total five confluences i.e NandaPrayag, KarnaPrayag, and VishnuPrayag making it an important pilgrimage destination.

Govindghat, Valley of Flowers, Auli, Joshimath, Nanda Devi Raj Jat Yatra are some of the most important tourist attractions in Chamoli.
