Colombo or #koləmbə or Koḻumpu is the commercial capital and largest city of Sri Lanka. Colombo just south of the Kelani River is a metropolitan area with a population of nearly 6 million. It is adjacent to the Greater Colombo area which includes Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte, the legislative capital of Sri Lanka and Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia.

Portuguese era started in Colombo around when the first explorers arrived in Sri Lanka in 1505. The Dutch era started in 1630s when the pushed out the Portuguese and British era started in 1815 they routed the Dutch. Historically, Colombo referred to the area around the Fort and Pettah Market which is known for the variety of products available as well as the Khan Clock Tower, a local landmark.

A picturesque town there are numerous places worth visiting in and around the city including Colombo fort, Galle Face Green, a great tourism destination. Known for its stunning beaches other places worth visiting include Gangaramaya Temple, St. Lucia’s Cathedral, Wolvendahl Church, Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque, Viharamahadevi Park formerly Victoria Park, National Museum of Colombo, Town Hall, Memorial Hall Square, Pettah Floating Market and Old Dutch Hospital and many British era buildings. The city being the economic hub is the head office of many corporate offices and handles majority of Sri Lanka’s foreign trade.

The city is also the largest educational centre with numerous schools and colleges. The city is also the premier medical hub with all major hospitals. the city is known for art and cultural hub of the country. Most popular festival in Colombo is Buddha Jayanti. Christmas, Eid Ul Fitr and Eid Ul Adha are other major festivals that are celebrated in Colombo. Colombo is home to several performing arts centres, where musical and theatrical performances are held such as Lionel Wendt Theatre, Elphinstone and Tower Hal that show western-style productions.

Navarangahala is first national theatre designed and built for Asian and local style musical and theatrical productions. Nelum Pokuna Mahinda Rajapaksa Theatre is a world-class theatre. Besides National Museum established in 1877 that houses crown jewels and throne of the last king of the king of Kandy, Sri Vikrama Rajasinha, there is also the Colombo Dutch Museum that details the Dutch colonial history of the country. Also worth visiting are Oriental bazaar, Cinnamon Gardens, and Beira Lake. Colombo is the commercial centre of the island; as such is home to numerous major manufacturing units that provide employment to people from the city as well as outside.
