Dhanbad is the second-most populated city in Jharkhand, India and the coal capital of India.. Dhanbad has one of the oldest markets in the region and is also a centre of large scale industries. It is known for its coal mines and industrial establishments; The city is surrounded by about 112 coal mines. The city was recently made famous in the Bollywood film ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’. Gateway to Jharia coal fields the city is fed by the mighty Damodar river that provides water and electricity to the city. There are numerous places worth a visit in and around the city, however the most well known among these include Bhatinda Falls located 14 kms from Dhanbad. The waterfalls which is in full flow during #monsoon is a popular picnic spot for local and tourist. Maithon Dam that derives its name from “Mai Ka Sthan”, the place for the Hindu Goddess Maa Kalyaneshwari. Is a major dam and picnic spot. It is part of the Damodar Valley Corporation that manages all the dams on the Damodar river.
Another place worth visiting is the Topchanchi Lake located near the National Highway 2, Another place worth visiting for tourist is the Panchet dam, part of the Damodar Valley Corporation. It is one of the first dams to be built after independence of India. At both the dams boating facility is available to tourist for a ticket. Another place worth visiting for tourist ins the Birsa Munda Park, the only park in Dhanbad and it is counted among the attractive places nearby which attracts people in large numbers. Spread over 21 acres of land having a walking path, lawns, a canteen, a playground and toy rides for children.
The Birsa Munda Park was opened in November 2009. Another place worth visiting for nature loving tourist is the Topchanchi Wildlife Sanctuary. Spread over 9 sq. kms and blessed with sprawling grasslands and bamboo trees that make a dense forest, it supports a wide range of flora and fauna, Animals such as leopard, jungle cat, cheetal, barking deer, wild boar, mongoose, langur, jackal, fox and wild dogs can be witnessed at the wildlife sanctuary. The serene and charming ambience of the Parasnath hills that abutts the area attracts tourists who spend quality time amidst nature’s spendor.
The best time to visit the sanctuary is from October to March with Topchanchi lake being the top attraction. Dhanbad also attracts pilgrims from neighboring district who visit Shakti Mandir located in the very heart of the city on the Thorapathak Road and devoted to Goddess Durga. Pilgrims also visit the Lillori Sthan Mandir which is dedicated to the Goddess Kali. it is an important temple situated at the banks of River Katri and a distance of 18.5 kilometres from Dhanbad. Also worth visiting is the Kalyaneshwari Temple situated on the left part of Maithon Lake, near Dhanbad City and dedicated to Mata Kalyaneshwari.
