Dubai or Dubayy is the most populous city in the UnitedArabEmirates, UAE and the capital of the Emirate of Dubai. Established in the 18th century as a small fishing village, the city grew rapidly after the discovery of crudeoil in the 21st century into a cosmopolitan metropolis with a focus on tourism and hospitality. Dubai is one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. It has the second most five-star hotels in the world and the tallest building in the world, the BurjKhalifa.

Located in the eastern part of Arabian Peninsula on the coast of Persian Gulf, Dubai aims to be the business hub of Western Asia. It is also a major global transport hub for passengers and cargo. As a centre for regional and international trade, Dubai’s economy relies on revenues from trade, tourism, aviation, realestate, and financial services. About the name, Dubai one theory suggests the word used to be the souq in Ba. An Arabic proverb says “Daba Dubai” meaning “They came with a lot of money.”Divided into Old Dubai, Dera Dubai and New Dubai the area was covered with sand about 5,000 years ago as the coast retreated inland, becoming part of the city’s present coastline.

Pre-Islamic ceramics have been found from the 3rd and 4th centuries. Prior to the introduction of Islam people in this region worshipped Bajir. After the spread of Islam in the region, the Umayyad Caliph of the eastern Islamic world invaded southeast Arabia and drove out the Sassanians. Excavations by the Dubai Museum in the region of Al-Jumayra or Jumeirah revealed several artefacts from the Umayyad period. The establishment of a modern state began when Dubai signed the General Maritime Treaty of 1820 with British government along with the other Trucial States, following the British campaign in 1819 against Ras Al Khaimah emirate.

Dubai like its neighbouring emirates entered into an exclusivity agreement with UnitedKingdom in 1892Before the discovery of crudeoil and naturalgas in the region, Dubai’s geographical proximity to Iran made it an important trade location. Like other cities, the Dubai oil reserve was an important port of call for foreign tradesmen, mainly those from Iran, many of whom eventually settled here. During the 1970s, Dubai continued to grow from revenues generated from oil and trade, even as the city saw an influx of immigrants fleeing the Lebanese civil war.

Border disputes with other emirates continued even after the formation of the UAE; it was only in 1979 that a formal compromise was reached that ended disagreements. Dubai lies directly within the Arabian Desert. However, Dubai is significantly different from that of the southern portion of the UAE in that much of Dubai’s landscape is highlighted by sandy desert patterns, while gravel deserts dominate much of the southern region of UAE. The flat sandy desert gives way to the Western Hajar Mountains, which run alongside Dubai’s border with Oman.

The Western Hajar chain has an arid, jagged and shattered landscape, whose mountains rise to about 1,300 metres in some places. Dubai has no natural river bodies or oases; however, Dubai does have a natural inlet of water. The sandy desert surrounding the city supports wild grasses and occasional date palms, and the sands around the city are known for sanddunes that are ideal for dunebashing. Well connected by land, air and sea with all major cities of the world, the taxaven of Dubai is famed for its shopping and each of the souq or market are popular for selling one type of item.

Dubai has been called the “shopping capital of the Middle East”. The city is known as shopprtsparadise with shopping being the main draw for tourists. so much so that it is said ‘Do Buy in Dubai’. As such Dubai has been called the “shopping capital of the Middle East”. Famed for its nightlife Alcohol sale and consumption, though legal, is tightly regulated. Just like other emirates, the emirati population is very small with most of the residents being migrantworkers mostly from the Indian subcontinent, who form the backbone of Dubai’s economy.

One of the world’s fastest-growing economies, Dubai’s GDP is projected at fast despite all odds. Although a number of core elements of Dubai’s trading infrastructure were built on the back of the oil industry. Dubai has numerous shopping malls that form the basis of DubaiShoppingFestival. DubaiExpo2020 is one of the biggest draws of tourists and shoppers.

The city is known for its landmark skyscrappers, these include BurjAlArab, BurjKhalifa, PalmJumeirah, TheWorldIslands, DubaiMiracleGarden, DubaiMarina, and Address Beach Resort and Address Beach Residences. Close to Sheikh Zayed Road is the Dubai International Financial Centre, housed in a futuristic arch-shaped building, Known for its sandy beaches, there are numerous in and around the city. there are several amusementparks in and around the city. Arabic cuisine is very popular and is available everywhere in the city.

There are numerous restaurants, especially in Deira and Al Karama that sell everything from Fast food to South Asian, and Chinese cuisines. Home to a large number of 5-star hotels there are numerous hotels and resorts in the city that offer luxurious, mid-range and budget, accommodation. The city is a major hub for sports, education and healthcare in the UAE and middleeast. Dubai being a taxhaven and financial centre, numerous global companies have opened offices in the city making it a prime location for employment.
