#Gandhinagar is a planned city in the state of #Gujarat, #India. Till 1960 #Ahmedabad was the capital but the new capital city was planned and named after ‘Father of the Nation’ #MahatmaGandhi as Gandhinagar. Built to supplant Ahmadabad as capital, the city was begun in 1966. State government offices were transferred to Gandhinagar in 1970, and the city subsequently became a commercial and cultural center in Gujarat. The city was planned by two Indian town planners: Prakash M Apte and H. K. Mewada, who had apprenticed with Le Corbusier on #Chandigarh.
Gandhinagar has been accorded as the greenest capital city in Asia with more than 50% of its total area covered in trees There is a provision for parks, extensive planting, and a recreational area that gives the city a green garden-city atmosphere. Its most prominent landmark is Akshardham a massive Hindu temple with ornate carvings and sculpted pillars Its known for its light and sound on water show in its sprawling gardens. Other places include the Dandi Kutir museum traces the life of leader Mahatma Gandhi, who was born in Gujarat.
Along the Sabarmati River, the Indroda Dinosaur and Fossil Park in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, India, is a park that houses fossilized remains and petrified eggs of dinosaurs, it has a zoo, nature park, and botanical gardens, plus an adjacent dinosaur and fossil park. Craft man village is a good place for shopping in the city, where a lot of handicraft and other hand made items are available. Those interested in science can visit Gujarat science city which includes an amphitheater and energy park. The city wears a festive look during Uttarayan and Navratri festivals. Open to tourists throughout the year the best time to visit is from September to February.
