Giridih is headquarters of Giridih district of Jharkhand state, India. The literal meaning of Giridih is the land of hills and hillocks – giri, a Hindi word, means hills and dih, a word in local dialect, indicates land of. Before 1972, Giridih was part of Hazaribagh district. Giridih is known to be rich in coal, and has many small and big coal mines in and around the town. Giridih is situated in the Chota Nagpur plateau and is surrounded by a series of plateaus forested with sal tree, horseradish trees, bamboo and acacia trees.
