Jaisalmer is a former princely state in the #Indian state of Rajasthan, in the middle of the Thar Desert. Known as the “GoldenCity,” made famous by the iconic film SonarKella’ or Sonar Quila by the legendary film maker Satyajit Ray it’s distinguished by its yellow sandstone architecture that dominates the skyline. Jaisalmer Fort or the Sonar Quila is a sprawling hilltop citadel fortress buttressed by 99 bastions that is visible from any part of the town is the prime attraction. It is one of the few fort in the world that is still inhabited. Its massive walls made of yellow sandstone glow in the sun that gives it the ubiquitous name Sonar Quila.

The fort was built in 1156 by Rajput ruler Jaisal, who also founded the city at the same time. The fort is strewn with numerous buildings of importance including the ornate Maharaja’s Palace and intricately carved 7 Jain temples that date back to the 15th and 16th centuries. Jaisalmer is also known for the fairy-tale architecture of its magnificent historic havelis (mansions), located both inside and out of the fort. Many can be found in the narrow lanes about 10 minutes walk north of the fort, including the 19th century Patwa Haveli, the city’s biggest and most important on.
