Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh is called the city of nawabs, it played a key role in India’ independence. Lucknow Pact was an agreement between IndianNationalCongress and MuslimLeague at a joint session of both parties in December 1916 under which the two parties agreed to allow representation to religious minorities in provincial legislatures. The Muslim League leaders agreed to join Congress movement demanding Indian autonomy. Mahajan represented Congress and A.K. Fazlul Haq led Muslim League in 1916. Mahatma Gandhi had also participated in this event.

The city remained an epicentre of activity during the freedom movement. The present General Post Office (GPO) was earlier called ‘Ring Theatre’ and used by British for organising cultural events, screening movies, holding parties and for recreational purposes. It displayed board bearing text—’Dogs and Indians are not allowed’. The building, was turned into special court during ‘Kakori train tragedy’ trial. There are numerous places of historical importance in and around the city for tourist to visit. These include RumiDarwaza, a Mughal gateway. BaraImambara shrine has a huge arched hall.

Upstairs, BhoolBhulaiya is a maze of narrow tunnels with city views from its upper balconies. The grand Victorian Husainabad Clock Tower was built as a victory column in 1881. Among other places to visit include RumiDarwaza, ChotaImambara, and Ambedkar Memorial, Nawab Wajed Ali Shah Zoological Garden. Also worth visiting is ‘The Residency’ that was scene of more than 1 year of siege during 1857 Revolt. The city is famous for its delicious food items which include Kebab, Biryani, Chole Bhature, Basket Chaat, Veg Kebab Parantha, Malai Makkhan and Chicken ,Shawarma for tourist to taste.

The most important item tourist can buy are chicken work kurta. Among the other places to visit is trans Gomti Area that is famous for numerous restaurants, multiplex, shopping malls, and swanky IT offices. There are numerous well known educational institutes includes La Martinier and IIM, Lucknow that are worth visiting. Also, worth visiting is the beautiful Vidhan Sabha building and Lucknow Metro rail. Well connected by rail, road and air the city is a must visit for tourist.
