Mahbubnagar is a city in Mahbubnagar District of the Indian state of Telangana, India. The city’s name was changed to Mahabubnagar on 4th December 1890, in honor of Mir Mahbub Ali Khan Asaf Jah VI, the 6th Nizam of Hyderabad (1869-1911 AD). It is the headquarters of Mahbub Nagar Mandal in the Mahbub Nagar revenue division. The city was formerly known as in medieval times “Rukmammapeta” and in the 19th century as Palamooru. meaning “land of milk” due to its milk production.
The city of Mahbub Nagar is located at a distance of 98 km from Hyderabad 130 km from Kurnool and 105 km from Raichur. Well connected by road and rail with air link provided by Hyderabad. The city area that forms Mahabub nagar has held historic significance. It was under Janapada rule by the 6th century BCE and later was Maurya territory. The region was at the core of the Satavahana dynasty from 221 BCE to 218 CE, and also a large part of the Chalukya dynasty from the 5th to the 11th century CE, later part of the Kingdom of Golkonda (c. 1364 – 1512).
It was a strategic place to control for Chalukyas, Bahmanis, Vijayanagar rulers, and Golconda nawabs. Mahaboobnagar is also a land of Samsthanas (princely regions) with Gadwal, Wanaparthy, and Kollapur regions successfully controlled for several centuries. Mahbubnagar has several tourist destinations worth visiting. Mahabubnagar is popular for innumerable diamond mines such as Golconda mine and is believed to be the place of origin of the famous Kohinoor diamond.
There are several religious and heritage sites in and around Mahabubnagar, dating back to time immemorial. including the oldest terracotta style Jain temple in Alvanpalli village of Mahabubnagar district. This temple was built between the 7th and 8th centuries. This temple is one of the two such structures in India other built during the Gupta period. Also worth visiting are Beechpally Anjaneyaswamy Temple, Sri Laxmi Venkateswara Swamy Temple, Sri Ranganayaka Swamy Temple Tourism in Mahbub Nagar is not just about religious places, other places worth visiting include Farhabad on eastern ghats where tourists can stay the jungle camp.
Other places worth visiting include Bada Talab, Pillalamarri banyan tree, Alampur Brahma temples, Gadwal and Mallelatheertham waterfalls as well as Rajolibanda Dam, Jurala Dam, Koilkonda Fort, Vanaparhy Palace, Gadwal Fort, Kollapur, and Somasila.The city is open to tourists except during the summer season. The eastern ghats and Nallamalla hills are very near to the city.
There are several lodges and hotels that provide mid-range to budget acco0modation. The restaurants serve spicey veg and non-veg food, especially hyderabadi ciuisine. Shopping in the city is centered mainly around shopping malls that sell everything from local to international branded products. There are several well-known educational institutes in the city. Most of the places can be covered in 1-2 days and hence Mahaboobnagar is an ideal weekend getaway
