Valmiki National Park, Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary is located at the India-Nepal border in the West Champaran district of Bihar, India on the bank of river Gandak. It is the only National park in the state of Bihar. Spread across 880 sq. km, Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR) is one of the natural virgin recesses in east India, situated in the north west corner of Bihar. Ocated on India Nepal border, VTR comprises the Valmiki National Park and Valmiki Wildlife Sanctuary. The pristine forest and wilderness of VTR is an excellent example of Himalayan Terai landscape. The VTR covers an area which is almost 1/5th of the total area of the district. The landscape of VTR encompasses foothills ranges of Himalayan Sivaliks with mosaic of the cliffs, ridges, gorges, hills, streams and valleys; dense forests, open woodlands, grasslands, swamps and riverine fringe. The national park is home to wide variety of flora and fauna. these include e the Bengal tiger, one horned rhinoceros, Asiatic black bear, Indian sloth bear, otter, Indian leopard, wild dog, wild water buffalo, and wild boar and many more.

A bird watchers paradise the park is home to numerous variety of birds these include At present over 240 bird species have been reported from VTR. Also there are many retiles in the park including coba, king cobra, python, criocdiles, and ghariyals Some of the interesting birds of VTR are Nepal kalij pheasant, three-toed quail, paradise flycatcher, grey shrike, green willow warbler, tree pipit, white eye warbler, green barbet, waders, ibises, storks, pitta, plovers, snipes, pied hornbill, White-eared night heron, emerald dove, and many more. Open to visit by tourist from October to May, best season to visit the sanctuary is between November to March.

Nature lovers can go an jeep safari, In the jungle or boating on the river. They can also go on a guided nature walk or jungle trek. The park has a few eco-huts and forest rest houses for accommodation.

There are several places worth visiting in and around the park, these 8include Bheriyari Watch Tower, Bhikhna Thori, Rohua Nala, Kapan, Lalbhitiya, Manor Trek, Parewa Dah, Someshwar Peak and Valmikinagar. There are many historical sites around the national park. At Lauriya Nandan Garh, there is a 2000-year-old, 35-feet-high Ashokan pillar made of polished sandstone. Close to the stupa, in Nandan Garh, an 80-feet-high mound made of bricks. It is believed it is an Ashoka Stupa in which the ashes from Lord Buddha’s funeral pyre were enshrined.
